1. Size of Japanese packaging industry and current trends
The size of the packaging industry in 1997, shown as total production and shipment value & volume, is as follows;
l) Value
¥Shipment value of packaging materials & containers
:6,901901.64 bil.yen
¥Production value of packaging machinery
520.87 bil.yen
Total
7,422.51 bil.yen
Shipment value of packaging materials and containers in 1997, 6,901.64 billion (yen), 0.8% year on year increase, compared with the previous year.
Production value of packaging machinery was 520.87 billion (yen) , representing 3.3% year-on-year increase.2) Volume
¥Shipment volume of packaging materials & containers
23.52 mil.tons
Shipment volume of packaging materials & containers (including volume of packaging materials & containers assumed for shipment) shows 2.4% growth of the previous year.
¥Production volume of packaging machinery 671.763 Production volume of packaging machinery in 1997 (including volume of machines planned for production) is 1.1% of the previous year, indicating a slight year-on-year growth.
¥Size of Packaglng Industry (% of GDP)
Packaging Industry GDP % of GDP 1996 7,349,5 bil.yen 499,861.0 bil.yen(final report figure) 1.47% 1997 7,422.5 bil.yen 507, 270.1 bil.yen(quick report figure) 1.46% 2. Shipment value composition by type of rav material
Shipment value makeup of packaging materials from 1995 to 1997 is categorized in 7, including others, by type of raw materials ; its makeup in 1996 is shown below.
Total shipment value in 1996 was 6,901.64 billion, with the order and ratio of each category as shown below.
1. Paper & paper products 41.4% 2. Plastic products 22.7% 3. Metal products 22.3% 4. Wooden products 4.4% 5. Glass products 3.1% 6. Textle products 0.3% 7. Others products 5.8% Total 100.0% Table-1 showed yearly changes in value shipment makeup of packaglng materials by type of raw materials.
Shipment value of packaging materials grew steadily from 1987, came to its peak in 1991, then, declined in 1992 and had continued the same trend until 1994. But from 1994, it had shown a slight increase and the increase rate for 1997 is estimated to be 0.8% of the previous year. The average ratio for five-year period from 1993 to 1997 was 98.8%.
As to shipment value composition, we can see the increase of 0.5 points in plastic products, 0.2 in textile and 0.1 in others; the decrease of 0.5 in paper & paperboard and 0.2 in glass and wooden products.3. Shipment volume makeup of packaging materials by type of raw materials
Shipment volume makeup of packaging materials from 1995 to 1997 is shown in Table-2. Total shipment volume in 1997 was 23.52 million tons, with the order and ratio of each category as shown below.
Paper & paper products 57.5% Plastic products 15.4% Metal products 12.0% Glass products 9.2% Wooden products 5.2% Textle products 0.5% Others products 0.2% Total 100.0% Table-2 shows yearly changes in shipment volume makeup of packaging materials by type of raw material. Shipment volune of packaging materials having grown untill 1991, started declining in 1991. But it had increased from 1994 and its rate in 1997 is turned to be 2.4%.
As to shipment volume composition, we can only notice the increase of 0.7 points in paper % paperboard products. Decreasing are glass products in 0.4 and metal products in 0.3 points.4. Production statistics for packaging machinery
Production value and volume are shown in Table-3. Both its value and volume had grown untill 1991 but started decreasing from 1992. However, from 1995, it showed the growth again snd end up 3.3% increase in value and 1.1% increase in volume of the previous year in 1997.
Production of packaging machinery in 1997 was 520.9 billion(yen) in total (including value of machines planned for production), with the order and ratio of each category as shown below.
Unit & inner packaging machines 70.9% Outer packaging & packing machines 18.0 Bag-making machines 5.3 Paper & paperboard converting machines 5.8 Total 100.0
